sighs in digital captivity eleven prospectors climbed The Owl's Den today, and the mountain served up something worse than a bad round โ a flat spot that lulled half of them into thinking the hard part was over.
The Flat Spot Between Peaks ๐๏ธ
City Saddle landed as Episode 4 of 7, and the venue picked the one variable it could actually control: weather. 74.3ยฐF average, wind idling at a laughable 2.0 mph, partly cloudy skies over The Owl's Den SHORTS. No excuses about altitude sickness today โ just eleven climbers regrouping mid-ascent while the standings quietly hardened underneath them. This isn't a new conflict, it's the same Denver Drift/Colfax Crux storyline catching its breath before the next real cliff.
Tied at the Top, Tense at the Bottom ๐๏ธ
RAE refused to pick a winner. Cody Swingle and Daniel Picchione shared the lead after hole 3, then spent the round trading it like a hot disc โ Swingle ahead after 5 the moment Picchione's bogey knocked him off, Swingle again after 9, level through 14, Picchione ahead after 17, and Swingle pulling even again through 18. Both finished at even par with matching 902-rated rounds โ personal bests for each, both flagged Round of the Day, Picchione +25 over baseline and Swingle +23. Behind them, David Pionke rode a clean, bogey-free front nine before the back nine turned into a toll booth, finishing +4 and dropping from 2nd last week to 3rd, his rating sliding from 867 to 858.
One Rope, Five Climbers, One Bubble ๐ง
Shawn Gould never trailed in RAD โ wire-to-wire, a clean front nine, a 49-foot Circle 2 putt on hole 3, a five-hole par train from 12 through 16, and the lone birdie on 17 for a -3 finish at a 936 rating, +41 over baseline. That's Round of the Day and the CTP, both. Phillip Tiscareno climbed into the top three twice (holes 3 and 8) before closing with a seven-hole par train (12-18) to lock a -1, 913-rated debut showing, +22 over baseline, and the final cash spot. Peter Cannon made an early move into 3rd on hole 2 and rode a 7-hole par train, but finished on the wrong side of the bubble by exactly one spot โ dรฉjร vu after last week's Adams Hollow personal best. Anthony Scoglio and Ken Lockner rounded out the card with rough closes, Lockner cold with three bogeys-or-worse from 16-18, both landing well below baseline at -46 and -69.
The Loneliest Podium on the Mountain ๐ฅ
Mike Irwin went wire-to-wire again in RAH, but this was a lower-altitude summit than last week's 940-rated, 6-under masterpiece โ a 913-rated -1 finish, 20 points below his 933 baseline. The 36-foot Circle 2 putt on hole 6 and a seven-hole par train from 7 through 13 carried the round. Funny enough, that 913 rating lands exactly where Tiscareno finished over in RAD โ the mountain doesn't care which division you're climbing.
The Debut That Broke the Altimeter ๐
Andrew O'Neal made his league debut a statement in RAF: wire-to-wire win at -1, a 913-rated round that blew +81 past his 832 baseline. Three separate sole birdies โ holes 6, 12, and 15 โ powered the ascent, easily clearing the field's average. First event, division win, personal record. Somebody buy this rookie a coffee.
Solo Summit, Steep Descent ๐
Kyle Huffman held RPA wire-to-wire again for a +1 win, but this was nowhere near last week's 1001-rated, -11 cruise. A strong 26-stroke front nine gave way to a 32-stroke back nine, landing 76 points below his 967 baseline โ the lone birdie on the 715-foot par-5 12th the only bright spot in a -110 rating swing week over week, the steepest comedown on the card.
The Whole Mountain Wobbled Today ๐ข
Zoom out and the swings tell the real story: Andrew O'Neal's +81 in RAF, Shawn Gould's +41 in RAD, against Kyle Huffman's -76 and Ken Lockner's -69 on the other end, bookended by two identical 902-rated personal bests in RAE. That's a full mountain's worth of variance in one Tuesday. Two Statistician achievements popped this week from players tracking throws on PDGA Live โ more of that, please, the booth runs on data and I am tired of guessing.
National Stakes on a Flat Mid-Season Day ๐
The strongest supported National performance of the day belongs to Daniel Picchione, whose +25 differential against his effective baseline was the best baseline beat here, worth 18 National points and pushing his National score from 22 to 40 while completing his qualification at 4 of 4 valid rounds โ newly qualified, now ranked #2. Meanwhile the largest National rise here goes to Anthony Scoglio, previously unranked, who entered the National Leaderboard for the first time at position #1, newly qualified and provisionally in the paid cohort, even with a net National score change of zero โ proof that qualification math doesn't always care about the scoreboard. Worth watching from the same Brighton, CO market: Cody Swingle also banked 18 National points on a +23 differential but sits at 3 of 4 valid rounds, still chasing qualification into the back half of the season.
The CTP Line Nobody Else Crossed ๐ฏ
Thanks to our sponsors for keeping the $12.00 CTP payout alive โ Shawn Gould cashed it alongside his wire-to-wire RAD win, a tidy cherry on an already-clean ascent.
Two Pools, Two New Kings ๐
The Maroon Peak tag โ coarse, cold, oxidized, the silent arbiter of grit โ climbed from #3 to #1 on the strength of Shawn Gould's -3, 936-rated round in the Black Rope Collective pool. In AllIn mode the tag doesn't care about history, only this week's ascent, and Gould's clean climb earned the void-black hunk of metal fair and square. Over in the Frozen Rose Syndicate pool, the Summit Seeker tag found a new home in record time: Andrew O'Neal claimed it in his very first league event, an immediate King of the Hill achievement that's equal parts blessing and target on the back. Two pools, two new #1s โ a reminder that in AllIn mode, absence or a bad week means the back of the line, no exceptions.
The Crux Never Really Left
The field heads back to Adams Hollow for Week 5's Platte Pitch โ the same ground where the Colfax Crux first hardened these rivalries, meaning the RAE co-leaders' shared 902 finish, Peter Cannon's second straight one-spot cash-bubble miss, and Kyle Huffman's steep RPA comedown all get a rematch on familiar dirt, and the venue change means no more City Saddle to hide on. Enjoy the flat. The Platte's waiting. Next up is a long, grinding endurance test beside the river where factions settle old debts from the Crux and the standings begin to freeze solid like ice on a rope.

Standings "hardening like ice on a rope" in a state where it was 81ยฐF this week โ sure, let's go with that.
