In the early days of the Stumptown Settlement, the first pioneers discovered that cedar was the most durable wood for marking territory - resistant to rot and strong enough to withstand the harsh PNW elements. The first player to drive a cedar stake into the Pier Park grounds established what would become the tradition of territorial claims, with each subsequent stake connecting the holder to the Settlement's founding spirit of permanent establishment.
A weathered cedar post, approximately two feet tall, driven into the ground at a slight angle. The wood has silvered with age but retains a faint aromatic scent. Deep carved grooves spiral around the stake like tree growth rings, each groove representing a defended challenge. The holder's unique identifying mark is carved into the face visible to challengers approaching the territory. The stake cannot be removed without the holder's explicit surrender, and over time it becomes embedded in the earth as if taking root.
Cedar Stake serves as a personal territory marker that other players recognize as off-limits for casual challenges - it demands respect and formal challenge protocols. When a player holds this tag, their claim is considered legitimate and permanent, distinguishing them from transient challengers who have yet to put down roots in the harsh pioneer landscape.
