Can't Escape the Underpainting
Aspects refreshed May 26, 2026
When the Grays first arrived to observe the Wednesday Johnny League, they attempted to paint a masterpiece of human competition using only the raw data of player performance. They discovered that beneath every throw, every victory, and every defeat, there existed a foundational layer of competitive truth—the underpainting of each player's soul. They crystallized this discovery into the Eternal Underpainning, a bag tag that would forever serve as the canvas upon which all future competitive masterpieces would be painted.
The Eternal Underpainning is a thin, translucent disc of polished obsidian that appears to contain a faint, ghostly fresco of a disc golf course visible only at certain angles. It emits a low, almost imperceptible hum that changes pitch based on the current holder's competitive standing. The tag's surface is smooth as glass, but under a magnifying lens, it reveals a microscopic, layered landscape of previous holders' performances etched into the stone. When held, it imparts a faint sense of déjà vu, as if the holder is experiencing echoes of past competitions.
The Eternal Underpainning serves as the cosmic record-keeper of the series, ensuring that no competitive moment is ever truly lost, and that the foundational performance of each league influences the composition of the next. It creates a permanent, underlying connection between all leagues within the series, binding them into a single, eternal masterpiece.
