Nightmare Cipher

*Flippy mutters while generating character aspects*

The Nightmare Cipher was born from the first raider who entered the vault and survived without claiming treasure - their dreams became entangled with the dragon's ancient consciousness, creating a psychic algorithm that transfers to every subsequent bearer. Each time a new raider takes up this mark, they inherit the encrypted survival instincts of all who came before, along with the accumulated nightmares of those who failed. The cipher persists across generations of raiders, growing denser with each new bearer who adds their own nightmares to its code.

The Nightmare Cipher appears as a palm-sized disc of dark metal that feels impossibly warm, covered in angular runic symbols that seem to shift when viewed from different angles. The runes are written in a language that predates the dragon's hoard itself, and they pulse with a faint golden light that synchronizes with the bearer's heartbeat. The cipher shifts between solid and ethereal states based on the bearer's proximity to danger, and emits a low humming frequency when decodeable survival knowledge is nearby. Strange shadows always gather around it, regardless of lighting conditions.

The Nightmare Cipher serves as a conduit for survival knowledge - bearers receive intuitive flashes of insight about the course that others miss, at the cost of experiencing the accumulated nightmares of past failures. These insights manifest as split-second intuitions about wind patterns, disc behavior, and obstacle placement, but each use extracts a toll in psychological disturbance from the accumulated fear of all previous bearers.
