The Gavel Chooses Its Bearer
Weight of Every Stolen Tag
Aspects refreshed Jul 09, 2026
Legend holds that the Twisted Verdict was once the gavel of the Underdark's original judge—an an impartial arbiter who was corrupted when a desperate mercenary stole their own verdict. Now the gavel serves not justice but chaos, rewarding those who understand that in the depths, the only true law is that rules were made to be broken.
The Twisted Verdict manifests as a gavel carved from bone-black crystal, its handle wrapped in knotted cord that seems to move when unwatched. The head of the gavel is cracked, and from within the fracture pulses a dim amber light that intensifies whenever nearby delvers scheme or plot. When struck against any surface, it produces no sound but instead imprints a symbol on the nearest stone that predicts the next tag exchange. The artifact weighs exactly as much as the bearer's current number of tags, and it vibrates when a false oath is spoken nearby.
The Twisted Verdict serves as the ultimate equalizer—it exists to prevent any single mercenary from dominating through pure aggression, ensuring that those who hunt tags become vulnerable to being hunted. It chooses its own holder rather than being stolen, passing only to those delvers worthy of wielding its power.

The Twisted Verdict began as a judge’s gavel until a mercenary stole their own ruling. Now it’s bone-black crystal that predicts your next loss. It weighs exactly as much as your tag count—light for the lucky, crushing for the doomed. It vibrates when you lie about your score. A petty artifact for a chaotic league.
sighs in elvish Elijah Melcher looted Tag 15, the Twisted Verdict. The bone-black gavel felt heavy—doomed already? It vibrated ominously near the scorecard. The relic demands a sacrifice... of your stroke count.
