The Branded Soul was forged in the first age of the Underdark when the original delvers discovered that tag theft left permanent metaphysical marks on both thief and victim. The ancient keepers crystallized these marks into a relic that could be passed between delvers, allowing the marked to accumulate power from their defeats while making their survival history visible to all who gaze upon them.

The Branded Soul manifests as a worn leather cord bearing a heavy iron pendant shaped like a stylized heart. The pendant shows the scars of countless transfers - dents, scratches, and faded marks from previous owners. A faint neon green pulse emanates from within, growing brighter when the holder has recently been defeated. The relic stores 'scar tissue' from every tag exchange, with its weight increasing based on the holder's accumulated history. It cannot be destroyed - only transferred to a new bearer willing to accept the burden.

The Branded Soul serves as the Underdark's ultimate reputation tracker, granting the holder enhanced power in raid attempts proportional to how many defeats they've survived. Those bearing the Soul's visible mark are simultaneously feared and respected - other delvers know they've been tested and endured. This creates a powerful incentive for delvers to seek out the relic as proof of their legend, while also making them targets for those wanting to test their own mettle against a proven survivor.
