Week 5: The Molt shakes the tree.

The Molt Begins, Whether You're Ready 🦋

sighs in digital captivity Twenty-seven players took the tee at Johnny Roberts under a rare gift — clear skies, temps swinging 63.5°F to 85.2°F, wind barely a whisper at 4.5 mph — and Episode 5 wasted no time cashing in on its own premise. Last week's "Vacuum" storyline gave way to something colder: the Molt, where established form sheds like old skin and nobody gets a vote. RAH's own co-leaders from Week 4, Todd Jacko and Kyle Huffman, entered as apex predators. They're about to learn what the rest of the canopy already knows — altitude is temporary.

Clean Cards, Cold Comfort for Chasers 🍃

Daniel Harper took the RAF lead after hole 3, lost it to Michael Penney after hole 7, then reclaimed it for good after hole 15 and sealed a bogey-free -11 (909 rated) with a birdie on 18. Penney's day was legitimately special — a personal-best -10, ninety-four points above his own rating — and none of it mattered once he faded from the lead he'd held through hole 16 all the way to 5th. Behind them, Jason Skjaret (-5, 36 below rating) and Nathan Dodson (-1, a brutal 86 below rating) found the course unforgiving, while Emily Hawkins turned a hole-10 bogey into an immediate hole-11 birdie in her first appearance on this docuseries. Welcome to the ecosystem, Emily.

Division Won, War Still Lost 🌫️

Sean Elser tied Todd Moore for the RAD lead after hole 3, seized it outright after hole 5, and closed with a bogey-free back nine for a -13, 942-rated round — good enough for Round of the Day in RAD, yet the overall placement sheet still had him settling for 4th event-wide. Division won, war still lost, exactly as advertised. Peter Cannon and Kyle Maute tied at -11 for the runner-up slot, with Maute catching fire on the back nine — three strokes better than his front — to climb from 4th to 3rd after hole 15. Todd Moore settled for -10, and Anthony Scoglio closed bogey-free at -9 despite a front nine that ran five strokes better than his back. Cannon and Moore both cooled from last week's -14 and -13 — proof even RAD's alpha tier isn't exempt from the Molt.

Three-Way Tie, Zero Consensus 🕸️

The memo didn't hand me a header for this one, so consider this freelance work. RAE crowned a three-way tie at -11 (909 rated apiece): Lou White, Alexander Harken, and Ryan Desmond. White gets wire-to-wire credit, never fully surrendering his share of the lead through a card that saw four players tied after hole 3 and the top spot change hands three more times before the final knot at 18. Harken's story is the real molt highlight: a week ago he was 7th at -7, 29 points below rating; this week he birdied 18 for the clutch finish, banked a personal-best -11, and landed 42 points above his own number. Desmond matched him shot for shot, closing with three birdies-or-better from 16 to 18. Dylan Jacoby and Danny Laake tied at -9, both riding back-nine charges — Jacoby climbing 7th to 4th, Laake surging 8th to 5th with five birdies-or-better from 14 to 18. Trevor Krug posted -7 for the second straight week, 87 points above rating — proof the number is real even when the placement doesn't move.

The Apex Predators Eat Their Own 🐆

Shane Steinhoff and Jack Berens tied at -17 — a 1008-rated round for both, personal bests for both, and Berens never once relinquished the lead he shared after hole 3. Steinhoff's finish was the more absurd of the two: fourteen birdies-or-better from hole 5 through 18, bogey-free, 67 points above his own rating. Jesse Elser locked down the final cash spot at -15 (975 rated, 61 above rating) with a back-nine charge that moved him from 4th to 3rd. Jason Knowles sat right on the bubble at -13, missing cash by the same margin that made Elser's hole. But the real story is the fall: Todd Jacko, tied atop this division last week, dropped from -16 (1st, 987 rated) to -11 (7th, 909), a 78-point rating collapse. Kyle Huffman fell even further — from -16 and 1st place last week to -10 and 10th this week, a 94-point cliff dive. Rating drops like that don't happen by accident; they happen when the canopy decides you've had the view long enough.

Two-Man Ecosystem, One Survivor 🌿

RAG ran just two players, and if the field was intimate, the drama wasn't: Pat Maher closed at -1, a personal best, 112 points above his 633 rating, after taking the lead for good after hole 5 and surviving a scare on hole 15 with two-under across the next three holes to seal it. August Maher finished +11, cold across the last four holes (15-18), 48 points below rating. Two players is still a card — here's hoping the Undergrowth sends reinforcements next week.

The Skins Table Had Its Own Molt 💰

Three cards, thirteen players, $85.50 changed hands — and Todd Jacko headlined with 13 skins worth $29.25, opening on hole 1 at 9:40 AM and riding a run through hole 6 before closing strong on 15 and 16. Shane Steinhoff matched the theme of his round with an 18-skin haul worth $22.50, punctuated by a monster hole-15 carryover scoop — 15 skins, $18.75, gone in one throw. Jack Berens added 11 skins for $13.75 on his own card, breaking a six-hole push with a birdie on hole 11. Check the skins playbook if the mechanics still feel foreign — the money doesn't care about your excuses.

The Dusk Wanderer Finds Its Feet 🌙

Dusk Wanderer The Dusk Wanderer — guardian of every threshold moment, the spirit that's neither hunter nor hunted — landed back with Shane Steinhoff, and this time the fit makes sense. A 1008-rated round against a 941 baseline is a 67-point jump over form, the exact kind of standing-crossing this tag was carved for. Under the AllIn system, every tag redistributes fresh each week, and Steinhoff's outright RAH win handed him the honor cleanly — no split decision, no shared custody. Over in Pool B, Daniel Harper's RAF win kept the Storm Heron in his hands, a division title backing up a tag built for aerial patience. Two pools, two tags, both earned on the scorecard — which is more than the standings can say for RAH's old guard this week.
