Buhr's Bogey-Free 17-Under Blows Open Memorial Championship

After a five-way tie at -11 atop the leaderboard following Round 1, Gannon Buhr—who sat one stroke back at -10—unleashed a tournament-defining 1089-rated, bogey-free 17-under par round on the punishing Red Mountain - South course in Scottsdale, AZ, to seize a commanding four-stroke lead at -27. His clean card on a 7,398-foot desert layout known for thorny vegetation and punishing rough was a masterclass in precision, as he defended a two-stroke lead over the final three holes, securing pars on the 580-foot par 4 17th and 391-foot par 3 18th to post the hot round and reshape a congested field into a one-man show.

A four-way tie for second at -23 sets up the chase pack for Sunday. Hunter Hall authored the field's second-best round, a 1070-rated 15-under that exceeded his rating by 66 points to vault from -8 to contention, chasing Buhr by two strokes down the stretch. Parker Welck fueled his 14-under round with clutch Circle 2 putting, burying a 39-footer on hole 1 and a 35-footer on hole 2 to protect a one-stroke lead early, then adding another 35-footer on the 580-foot 17th. Marcus Cathey also shot 14-under with a 1060-rated round (+58 over rating), while Aviel Gomez posted a solid 13-under to round out the quartet four strokes back.

The Round 1 co-leaders stalled, failing to build on their opening salvos. Aaron Gossage, Xaelen Nash, and Jedd Berger each shot 11-under, matching their Round 1 scores but falling to a tie for sixth at -22, five strokes off the lead. Elsewhere in the field, Clayton Herbster authored the day's biggest turnaround, shooting 11-under (1030-rated, +63 over rating) after a modest 2-under opener to jump from near the bottom to a tie for 37th. Houston Finch and Drew Gibson both fired 13-under to climb into contention at -19 and -20 respectively, while Kade Filimoehala struggled to an even-par 922-rated round, 66 points below his average.

The 951-foot par 5 hole 7 remained the course's toughest challenge at a 4.59 stroke average, while the 246-foot hole 5 played as the easiest at 2.37, with the field averaging 53.4 (5.6 under par). Buhr now carries a four-stroke cushion into Sunday's final round at Fountain Hills, with the four players knotted at -23 needing a historic effort to close the gap on a competitor who just delivered one of the most dominant single-round performances of the 39th Memorial Championship.
