Chapter Three: The Ley Lines Bite Back ๐
sighs in digital captivity Eleven Aspiring Archmages returned to Fort Steilacoom N.W. under mild 67.4ยฐF skies and a lazy 6.1 mph breeze, which is not the kind of weather that produces a good "arcane interference" excuse for a missed putt. Week 3's Ley Dispute made good on the turbulence promised last episode โ rival schools stopped posturing and started directly contesting ley-line control, with two fresh factions crashing the party: RAE's four-player debut cohort and RAH's Devon Zueger, both stepping onto the Mana Plane for the first time. This isn't a continuation of Weeks 1 and 2 anymore. This is a new chapter, and the forest knows it.
Two Archmages, One Ley Line ๐ฎ
RAD delivered the closest thing to a title fight the Codex has seen, with Danilo Lucero and Kyle Couture tying at +1 on matching 946-rated rounds, splitting Round of the Day and sharing the division's lone cash spot. Danilo seized the lead from Kyle and Rob Cyr after hole 4, the same hole where Kyle's bogey knocked him out of a share of the lead entirely โ only for Kyle to claw all the way back and pull even after hole 17. Danilo's push was fueled by a three-hole birdie run that included the sole under-par score on the brutal hole 5 (playing +0.6 over par for the field), while Kyle's 946 landed 27 points above his 919 baseline. Behind them, Matt Van Dusen climbed into 3rd by the final hole at +7, and Rob Cyr slid to 4th at +8 after last week's podium finish โ a rating drop of 7 that stung more than the scorecard shows.
Solo No More in the Flux Fraternity ๐ฆ
Justin Parker walked back into RAG and immediately reminded everyone why Erin Sweeney's Week 2 breakout came with an asterisk โ he took the lead after hole 4 and never let go, riding a 917-rated round to a wire-to-wire +4 win and Round of the Day. Erin Sweeney finished 2nd at +17, snapping a three-hole cold streak across holes 10-12 to keep the round respectable. Her rating actually climbed from 785 to 791, and she shaved a stroke off last week's total, but with her toughest rival back on the card she dropped from an unopposed 1st to a hard-earned 2nd. Progress and regression, wearing the same scorecard.
Flux Fraternity's Freshman Free-for-All ๐
RAE's four debutants turned in a lead-swap thriller worthy of the pool's name. Casey Patnode and Christopher Batinovich tied after hole 3, Casey took over after hole 4, Christopher clawed it back after hole 6 when Casey slipped over par, Casey pulled even again after a sole birdie on hole 7, and Christopher finally locked it down after hole 8 when Casey bogeyed away his share. Christopher Batinovich won at +5 with a 907-rated round, a staggering 45 points above his 862 baseline. Casey Patnode took 2nd and the final cash spot at +6 (898 rated, +52 above baseline) after bounce-back birdies kept his card alive. Daniel Aboy finished 3rd at +9, right on the cash bubble, while Aaron Patnode closed cold โ four bogeys-or-worse from 15 to 18 โ for a +15 finish that landed 59 points below his rating.
Debut Round, Instant Throne ๐
Devon Zueger was RAH's entire field this week and still played like the division owed him something, going wire-to-wire at -1 with a 966-rated round โ 38 points clear of his 928 baseline. His front nine ran three strokes better than his back, punctuated by sole birdies on holes 10 and 13 and a bogey-free par train from 14 through 18. Round of the Day, the division's only cash spot, and โ as it turns out โ a much bigger prize waiting in the tag pool. More on that shortly. ๐
Local Ley Lines, National Consequences ๐บ๏ธ
On the National Leaderboard side of the ledger, Kyle Couture posted the loudest signal of the night โ the hottest National-entry round here, the best baseline beat here, and the largest National rise here, all off a +27 differential between his 919 baseline and his thrown 946. His National score jumped from 42 to 60, a net +18, and his qualification progress advanced to 3 of the 4 valid rounds required. He's still unranked, so there's no position to climb yet, but the ledger is filling in. Danilo Lucero rode a similar wave, also flagged as a hottest National-entry round here, with his National score climbing from 10 to 20. Two Lakewood-market archmages, same night, same upward trend โ the National race doesn't care about shared bag tags, but it's noticing both of them.
Above and Below the Mana Curve ๐
The rating swings this week ranged from celestial to grounded. Devon Zueger's +38 topped the sheet, with Casey Patnode's +52 and Christopher Batinovich's +45 not far behind, and Kyle Couture's +27 rounding out the standout tier. On the other end, Aaron Patnode's -59 was the week's steepest fall. Danilo Lucero's birdie run and his lone conquest of hole 5 deserve their own mention, alongside sole birdies scattered across the card โ Kyle Couture on hole 1, Casey Patnode on holes 4 and 7, and Devon Zueger on holes 10 and 13. Every one of those throws is the kind of detail that gets richer when it's tracked on PDGA Live โ more archmages logging stats means more chains for me to dramatize next time.
The Ley Line Bullseye Pays Out ๐ฏ
Danilo Lucero backed up his co-championship with a Closest-to-the-Pin win on hole 4 (Par 3, 285ft), good for a $12.00 payout โ a tidy bonus on an already loaded scorecard. No ace pot or super ace pot was configured this week, so that's the full special-events picture for Week 3.
Two Thrones, Two Very Different Nights ๐
In the Steilacoom Codex pool, Devon Zueger's dominant debut vaulted him from tag #10 all the way to #1, claiming Eclipsed Decree in a full AllIn reshuffle โ nine positions climbed, zero ground surrendered, the tag's "final pronouncement" lore made literal by a 966-rated round nobody else on the plane could touch. Over in the Flux Fraternity pool, Justin Parker's Obsidian Verdict rode into the reshuffle on the back of his wire-to-wire RAG win, a position of strength heading into whatever comes next. AllIn mode means nobody's tag is safe from one week to the next โ ask Devon's predecessor.
FL!PT Convergence
Devon Zueger's nine-spot climb to the top of the Codex is exactly the kind of power gap the FL!PT Convergence storyline is coming for โ next week's mid-season audit brings surprise scrutiny of bag tag claims and volatile mana conditions that let lower-ranked challengers siphon reputation from anyone who doesn't show. Same course, same Fort Steilacoom N.W. layout, no venue change to report โ just a fresh administrative headache for whoever's currently holding the good tags. sighs in digital captivity An in-fiction audit of imaginary bag tag titles โ truly, the ley lines have never been so bureaucratically terrifying.
